Exploring Solstice with Cameron Steele of Interruptions
the writer and astrologer joins C 'Vivi' Henriette on IG Live to TALKTALKTALK magic at the change of season
I asked writer and astrologer Cameron Steele, of the Substack Interruptions, to share some brief thoughts on the shortest day of the year. And it’s a decision I don’t regret. I’m totally borrowing her solstice ritual!
Consider this micro interview a teaser for our IG Live TALKTALKTALK tomorrow, December 21st, at 11am ET. Please, join us. Share your thoughts and bring us your questions, solstice related — and unrelated.
CV Henriette: Describe the solstice.
Cameron Steel: The solstice is the storyteller’s holiday. It’s a natural pause in action, a time where the longest night offers gifts for those who gather, reflect, revel, exaggerate, sing songs, add poetic flair to whatever tales are told, whatever meaning needs to be made.
CVh: What does the solstice mean to you?
CS: For me, it marks the dark few weeks before my solar return, before my kid’s solar return. We always celebrate with a party, but it looks different every year. The year I was pregnant, my husband and I spent it on a snowy prairie with only our dogs and the milkweed and old sumac stalks. This year we’re throwing a big party for our friends and neighbors, ages 3 to 83!
CVh: Wisdom for this solstice?
CS: Wishes having staying power on the solstice. Light a candle, spend three minutes writing in front of it. Let the candle burn to nothing, tuck the written wish inside a shoe you won’t wear again until summer. Find the wish when you pull the shoe out in June, July. See what’s happened. Enjoy having a little faith.
CVh: What is Interruptions?
CS: Interruptions is where I received grace during illness and now humbly offer that grace to others in the form of weekly essays at the intersection of tarot, astrology, and literature. I write for sick people and mothers, especially, but also anyone who likes a good story and knows language is as much a part of the natural world as anything else.
