Do you ever wonder what goes into writing a horoscope? Should you read for your sun, moon or rising sign? I reached out to astrologer & horoscope writer Lars Mellis to TALKTALKTALK horoscopes and the astro weather ahead.
Do you love astrology? Do you live in LA? Join us live in conversation next Tuesday, February 25th, at the Philosophical Research Society for Los Angeles Astro Salon.
Vivi Henriette: Why do you love astrology?
Lars Mellis: I love how astrology functions like a helpful Swiss-Army knife tool which adds dimension to my life. Firstly, when studying my natal chart, astrology functions like a unique mirror reflecting back to me parts of myself I don’t normally observe. Astrology is also like a helpful tool meteorologists use when forecasting the weather. Studying transits, progressions, solar return charts, etc provides me with another layer to understand or ground my lived experience. Astrology also functions as a bridge to understanding others through their natal charts. Lastly, astrology always functions as a time capsule, highlighting the zeitgeist of the time through the cosmos.
Vh: What’s something one should take into consideration before reading their personal horoscope?
LM: It is vital to recognize how nuanced and complex astrology is before reading your personal horoscope. I say this because you are only reading for one sign, while your chart is composed of a diverse array of placements which all interact with one another in exciting and unique ways. As a result, astrologers can only provide you with a glimpse of the day’s/week’s/month’s focus in a personal horoscope. That’s why I always recommend 1:1 consultations to clients who seek the most accurate astrological forecasting.
Vh: Should we read for our sun or rising sign?
LM: I am wholeheartedly a proponent of reading for your rising sign. Horoscopes are typically written through the lens of each sign representing the 1st house, so it only makes sense to read for your Ascendant first. That being said, reading for the sun provides a backdrop (kind of like the setting in a story), so is beneficial as well - just after reading for your rising sign.
Vh: Tell me something to look forward to in 2025.
LM: I have a two-pronged answer! Firstly, I look forward to Jupiter entering one of its favorite signs, Cancer, starting on June 9th. Jupiter in Cancer is an abundant transit supporting efforts around cultivating more warmth and splendor within the home. Cancer rules the bosom in medical astrology and I view this transit as an ideal time to prioritize nurturing yourself and your loved ones.
In November of this year, Jupiter in Cancer will be a part of a Grand Water Trine with the Sun in Scorpio and Saturn in Pisces all of which will be at 25 degrees on the 17th. This is an incredibly productive and fortifying transit, especially when it comes to watery matters like emotional connection or cultivating intimacy. As a result, this is a noteworthy month if you are looking to launch a new endeavor or work with electional astrology.
Vh: Challenging dates to mark off the calendar? Name the dates and tell me about the terrain.
LM: The first quarter of 2025 has, and will continue, to be challenging. March may feature Mars no longer retrograde (still very much in its post-shadow), but does feature the start of two new planetary retrograde periods, Venus stationing on the 1st and Mercury stationing on the 15th. Both of which begin in Aries and move back into Pisces.
At the same time, we’ll be experiencing our first eclipse of the year in Virgo on the 14th and the last eclipse of the Aries/Libra eclipse cycle on the 29th. Eclipses are evolutionary transits which stimulate growth through scrutiny and shake-ups.
Mars will be in Cancer, the sign associated with nationalism/tribalism, for the entire month as well. September is the other month this year with eclipses. September 21st’s eclipse chart is especially interesting as it features a tight opposition to Saturn while also technically forming a grand trine with Uranus and Pluto. The whole chart is a kite pattern and is some truly dynamic astrology!
Vh: What’s the story with 2026?
LM: 2025 is about societal shifts which begin to click into place in 2026. By the end of April 2026, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will have all firmly ingressed into new signs while Pluto will be hanging out in the first few degrees of Aquarius. The year is colored with several meetups between the outer planets, especially over the summer.
Vh: What’s the best way for people to keep in touch?
LM: Lars_Stars on instagram is my most used social and then my website larsstars.com is another way to keep in touch :-)
